Beware of Fax Phishing Scams

Recently there has been an increase in Fax Phishing where businesses will receive a fax from what claims to be the Internal Revenue Service. With improved spam filters and the availability of free IP fax services, fraudsters are going back to using faxes to scheme businesses and individuals into giving personal and financial information.

First Bank is diligent in helping our customers stay educated and informed to new scams. If you receive a fax from what claims to be the IRS or another official looking correspondence, do not call or fax any information back without first verifying the validity through your own methods, and not using any of the numbers given by the potential fraudster. To learn what to do should you fall victim to fax phishing, click here.

Notice of Changes in Temporary FDIC Insurance Coverage for Transaction Accounts

IOLTA Amendment Signed
On Wednesday, 12/29/2010, President Obama signed into law H.R.6398, an act to require the FDIC to fully insure Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts (IOLTAs) under the temporary coverage provisions in §343 of the Dodd-Frank Act. This means that IOLTAs at FDIC-insured institutions will be provided the same deposit insurance coverage as noninterest-bearing transaction accounts beginning 12/31/2010 and ending on 12/31/2012. The FDIC has indicated that it will soon issue guidance relating to any changes to its notice requirements under §330.16(c) of its Deposit Insurance Regulations.
